What some people do behind closed doors is completely horrifying. Thankfully, neighbors caught on to what was happening during this man’s garage and called the local authorities. Sadly, though, such a lot had gone on, and a precious life was nearly lost.

A mechanic in Costa Rica kept a “guard dog” in such inhumane conditions that it had been a miracle she was still alive. Cala, a sweet, innocent Pit Bull, spent her days on a brief chain. She had an old tire crammed with dirty clothes to rest on but the chain she was attached to was so short, she was never ready to put her head down.
To make matters even graver, her owner rarely fed her.
The local dog sanctuary, Territorio de Zaguates, also as police, came to see on Cala after neighbors reached out.
“I felt desperately sad and frustrated,” Lya Battle, founding father of Territorio de Zaguates, told The Dodo. “The picture I first saw of her showed a pitiful creature robbed of its dignity and prepared to offer up — a dog whose spirit had been broken and was just expecting the top to return while living a never-ending nightmare.”

Cala was thankfully taken from the callous owner and delivered to the vet. The dog, besides being malnourished, was also covered in wounds.
“Her healing process was slow, and therefore the humans round her still had to cause her pain through the curing of her wounds, especially the gash in her neck caused by years of hanging from a decent metal chain round her neck,” Battle told The Dodo. “Nursing her was as painful for her because it was for us, but eventually she understood that after the pain came love and treats, so she learned to affect it sort of a champ.”
Cala was delivered to the sanctuary once she was tolerably . Volunteers were troubled by her behavior initially . She didn’t seem to love other dogs or people. But then, as she realized she was finally safe, she warmed up to everyone. She was just a touch shy and unsure of what others round her may do.
“We saw Cala go from a weak, feeble animal, too depressed to worry , to a stronger creature willing to face up for herself,” Battle said. “With time, we also need to see that willful creature incorporate play and goofiness into her daily routine. With a day that passed, we saw more of her personality come through. She went from fearing humans to trusting them and even ‘bugging’ them for attention.”
Then something horrible happened! A band of misfits snuck into the shelter and placed sausages laced with poison all around. nobody was sure why this happened, but 16 dogs died from the incident and Cala was nearly the 17th. She had eaten a number of the sausage but luckily she came through.
“Cala was still alive once we need to her,” Battle said. “Probably her size helped tolerate the dose — that or she only need to alittle bite of it. In any case, Cala was saved. She struggled with neurological problems for a short time then but she came over again. She’s just too tough a cookie!”
“I think there are not any coincidences in life,” Battle added. “Cala survived years of neglect, years of torture, years of hunger and illness. She was hanging on to life for a reason and she or he had already acknowledged that life had been well worth the long wait when again humans appeared within the picture eager to hurt her. So although we were devastated by the loss of all the others, that incontrovertible fact that Cala had managed to tug through was with great care fitting to her spirit.”
Cala was finally ready to attend a family and obtain spoiled with special attention and love!
Even though Cala is now safe, people on social media couldn’t stop sharing how disgusted they were by the way she was treated.

She was wronged, terribly terribly wronged, but she holds no grudges. She’s a gorgeous , sweet animal who will now live a life that’s only about love.
